Picking out one movie, let alone three, to have on as background noise while making out with your boyfriend—among other things—was a task. You needed something that provided the perfect soundtrack for groping hands, and hearing someone screaming while getting sliced and diced or blown up wasn’t exactly boner inducing. So the movies had to be just right.

I was in the middle of perusing our video library when my phone buzzed on the couch beside me. Picking it up, I was surprised to see Mina’s name on the display. She rarely called me unless there was an emergency, so I quickly answered the phone as concern pushed any thoughts of picking a movie out of the way.

“Hey, is everything okay?”

“Foster, I am so sorry to be bothering you.”

She sounded a bit frazzled, which instantly had me on alert. “You’re not bothering me at all.” Just interrupting my movie browsing.

“Sure I am, but I love you for denying it. I hate to ask, but is there any way you can come to Clancy’s? Shia didn’t show up, and we have a huge party coming in, which means we are short-staffed today. Do you mind coming in for a few hours until the party is done?”

My heart sank. I was really looking forward to some time off to relax and be with Stellan. But Mina sounded so desperate, how could I tell her no?

“Of course, Mina. Let me get changed, and I’ll be there in about half an hour.”

“Thanks, Foster, you’re a lifesaver.”

Sure I was. I instantly regretted my snarky thoughts, but I couldn’t help it.

Even if I was always willing to help, that didn’t mean I liked doing it most of the time. I told myself it was only for a few hours and that Stellan wasn’t home anyway, so it wasn’t that big of a deal. Besides, the tips from the party should be pretty nice. Even though living with Stellan meant splitting the bills, it was still nice to deposit a chunk of change into my bank account. I had no idea what I was saving up for, though. Maybe a nice vacation for just the two of us.

Heaving myself off the couch, I went to our room and quickly donned my uniform. Then, walking out to my car, I called Stellan to let him know of the change of plans.

“Foster? Hey, need help picking out a movie?”

My heart nearly melted at his deep, raspy voice. Hearing it sent tingles down my spine as I was reminded of how it’d sounded in my ear last night when his body slid into mine.

Not the time, Foster.

“No, unfortunately there’s been a slight change of plans. Mina called and asked me to come into work for a few hours.” I explained about the new hire not showing up.

“That’s a bummer.”

“I’m sorry. I know we had plans this afternoon to watch movies.”

“Foster, I only meant it’s a bummer because you need some time to rest. But you said it’s for a few hours, right? There is still plenty of time to do that later.
